In
a long career that has seen him come full circle from a Boston based sincere
folkie through time spent as lead vocalist for southern cult rockers the Truly
Dangerous Swamp Band and back to his folk roots, songwriter and singer Jaime
MIchaels has always remained true to one thing ~ the song.
His 7th and latest CD, crooked, was released to enthusiastic reviews in May 2009 following his appearance at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Jaime has once again combined lovely melodies, poetic lyrics and heartfelt performances with long time producer Jono Manson's simple but masterful production. An impressive lineup of guest artists includes Austin's Albert and Gage, accordionist Joel Guzman (the Flatlanders), guitarist Andrew Hardin (Tom Russell), percussionist Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees and REM), mandolin player Sharon Gilchrist (Tony Rice/Peter Rowen), guitarist Ben Wright and vocalist Larkin Gayle.
The title track, crooked, is wondrously simple: wise lyrics and fingerpicked acoustic guitar, backed by Albert & Gage's soaring harmonies. The poignant A Momentary Thing is a bittersweet reflection of childhood. Maybe Superman, written with Bruce Donnola takes a humorous look at love from a window ledge 28 stories above Manhattan. Perhaps the most beautiful song on the album is One Spectacular Moon, a co-write with Jeff Talmadge.
This
is Michaels' best work yet. At least so far
he and producer Manson have
just begun work on a new album, tentatively titled NExT
